Selecting the Right Fiber Laser Cutter for Texas Stainless Steel Fabrication: A Business Guide

First, review the common types of stainless steel, the basic classification of austenitic, martensitic, ferritic, duplex stainless steel and so on. Considering the different performance of these types in cutting, such as cutting parameters, gas selection, common problems, etc., as well as the more concerned about the quality of the cut, such as oxidation, burrs, etc., we have made the following statistics.

▶ Austenitic stainless steel (304/316/321)

Material characteristics: strong corrosion resistance, non-magnetic, high ductility.
Fiber Laser Cutting machine features: As the material is controlled by oxidation, the need for nitrogen protection to prevent blackening of the cut surface; the use of medium-high power cutting more effective, the proposed fiber laser cutting machine is 3-6kw, cutting effect of the cut surface silver white, no oxide layer.

Material characteristics: high hardness, wear-resistant (high carbon content), magnetic

▶ Ferritic stainless steel (430/409)

Material characteristics: magnetic, high temperature oxidation resistance (high chromium content, no nickel)
Fiber Laser Cutting machine features: pay attention to the burr problem, the need to increase air pressure (nitrogen) and adjust the focus position; cutting machine power recommended 1-3kw, mainly suitable for thin plate cutting.

▶ Duplex stainless steel (2205/2507)

Material characteristics: high strength and corrosion resistance (austenite + ferrite mixed structure)

▶ Precipitation hardening stainless steel (17-4PH/630)

Material characteristics: ultra-high strength (strengthened by heat treatment)

▶  Common Problems and Solutions

⭕ Cutting austenitic stainless steel edge blackening
Reason: Insufficient purity of nitrogen gas or too low gas pressure.
Solution: Upgrade the gas purity to 99.99% or more, and adjust the gas pressure to 1.5-2MPa.

⭕Decrease in hardness after cutting martensitic stainless steel
Reason: excessive tempering in the heat-affected zone.
Solution: Adopt pulse cutting mode and reduce the heat input of continuous laser.

⭕ Deformation of thin plate (<1mm) cutting
Optimization: Use high frequency low duty cycle pulses with honeycomb table to reduce heat accumulation.
